Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. I have spent my working life in a place that runs on exactly those three words — and I had never noticed until this morning.

Today is the 14th of July — Bastille Day. It marks two things: the 1789 storming of the Bastille, the end of absolute monarchy; and the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, the day a fractured country chose to stand as one. Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. I have spent my working life in a place that runs on exactly those three words, and I had never noticed until this morning.
