Pilots Are the Biggest Complainers in the World

Pilots complain more than anyone — I know, I'm one. So I run three lines against it. Gratitude doesn't deny the irritation. It puts it back to scale.

Pilots Are the Biggest Complainers in the World
A crew meal tray on an Airbus flight deck at cruise — salad, soup, bread, butter and a main of rice with chicken — the glowing flight displays behind. Bold white capitals read 'Pilots are the world's biggest complainers. Thank God I have it.'

💭 Pilots are the world's greatest complainers. I know, because I am one of them.

The complaint arrives at 02:00 or at 14:00 — it doesn't care

✈️ Check-in at 02:00 for a red-eye. By 04:00 you are at cruise, watching instruments that barely move. It is the least glamorous version of the most glamorous job on earth, and the grumbling comes easily. — 🔗 read more

So I run three lines against it:

  • Thank God I have the education to sit in this cockpit.
  • Thank God I have the health to hold my licence.
  • Thank God there is an entire airline behind me — the aircraft, the engineers, the maintenance, the people I will never meet — so that I can do the job millions can only dream about.

🎯 Three lines, and the complaint has nowhere left to stand.

It works on a twelve-year-old, too

✅ My son grumbles about emptying the dishwasher. Same rule, three lines:

  • Thank God you have a dishwasher.
  • Thank God there were dirty dishes — it means you ate.
  • Thank God for the whole life around you that makes this the worst part of your day.

🚫 The trap is thinking gratitude means pretending the 02:00 alarm is pleasant. It isn't. Gratitude doesn't deny the irritation; it puts it back to scale.

☝🏼 Whatever the annoyance, name three things you already have that made it possible in the first place. The complaint stays real. It just gets very small. Thank God I have it.
