Clear Communication Is a Myth. Confirmation Is the Real Skill.
Trusting that people understood you is naive. Clear communication isn't the skill — confirmation is. The two-second cockpit habit that ends 'I thought you said…'.
⚠️ Trusting that people understood you is one of the most naive things you can do. You said it clearly and assumed it landed. It did NOT. Now the report is late, the kids' pickup is missed, the project is half-built.
Please understand this: the message was never the problem; the confirmation was.
✈️ In flight, we close that gap with one habit: read-back, hear-back. Every time an air traffic controller (ATC) gives a pilot an instruction, the pilot monitoring (PM) reads it back. Every time.
- ATC: "Flight ABC, descend flight level 230."
- PM: "Descend flight level 230, Flight ABC."
If the read-back is wrong, it's caught in two seconds and corrected. It's slow. It feels redundant. It's also why air safety doesn't collapse.
🎯 You don't have a clearance, but you have the same risk. "So you're collecting Nicholas from football today, not me. Is the snack out, or do you want me to organise it?" It feels over-formal. It's also why your evening doesn't start with something to fix. Same at work: "My actions are the report by Thursday, brief the team Friday, hold the budget until next quarter. Correct?"
✅ Read it back. Summarise the instruction in your own words and ask "correct?" — out loud. Those two seconds of friction are a tax paid in advance to avoid the chaos later.
🚫 Don't accept a nod as confirmation. Silence is not agreement, and "I assumed they got it" is the cheapest habit today and the most expensive one tomorrow.
☝🏼 Nobody resents a read-back. They resent the missed pickup, the botched report, the half-finished project. Close the loop, or it snaps shut on you.
